Engraftment

This past week was the most difficult of my life. It has changed me, literally at the cellular level. Over time, I know I will grapple with some of the changes. The analysis has already begun. One thing is certain. My body went from high dose chemo to stem cell transplant to engraftment in less time than the average transplant patient. I asked God for that, and I know many of you made the same request. He answered.

Last Tuesday, I spiked a fever during the night, and again on Wednesday, and for a time, it looked as though my hopes for being discharged were dashed. But I managed to get through Thursday with no fever, one of the conditions of discharge. The other was an absolute neutrophil count greater than 500. My body had accomplished that as well. And so, after 16 days in the hospital, I was discharged yesterday.

I did receive two blood transfusions this past week as well as platelets on two occasions. The CVC, central venous catheter, that was implanted in my right chest was removed yesterday morning. What a relief that was! In a few weeks, it will heal and leave only a small scar.

So, I am recuperating under the watchful and caring eye of my sister, and I know I am in the best of hands, just as I was during my stay at OU Medical. I will be here through next week when I have lab work and my follow-up appointment with Dr. Selby, who will hopefully determine that I am ready to be transferred back to the care of Dr. Joudeh in Pensacola. After that, John will drive me home to my cats, my little townhouse, and the sandy beaches of the Gulf Coast.

There is so much more I want to share with you, and I will…it will just take time. For now, just know that I am doing fine, concentrating on what I need to do to grow stronger and feel normal again. I know your thoughts and prayers brought me this far and will continue to take me where I need to go.

I thank you.
